Since the NCAA first began allowing athletic scholarships in 1950. Baker Mayfield became the first play to start his career as a walk on, and win the Heisman trophy. Mayfield story began when he walked on at Texas Tech capturing the 83rd Heisman trophy by a large margin.
Mayfield had 732 first place votes and 2,398 points in voting totals. Bryce Love Stanford running back came in second with 1,300 points and 75 first place votes. Lamar Jackson Louisville quarterback last year’s Heisman trophy winner was third with 793 points and 47 first place votes.
Baker Mayfield yielded the third highest percentage of possible points receieved 86 percent since 1950, behind only Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith in 2006 and Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota in 2014. Baker Mayfield became the first senior to win the Heisman since Troy Smith in 2006. Also he won the Davey O’Brien award for the best quarteback in college football and the Maxwell award for player of the year.
Mayfield said “This is unbelievable for me being up here among these greats” Baker said upon receiveing the award with past Heisman winners standing behind him. “It’s something words can’t describe” God has put me in this position that I’m in he has truly blessed me alot of times I wonder why. It’s such and honor to be up here. It’s and unbelievable feeling.
Mayfield put together one of the most impressive indidvidual offensive seasons in college football history in the process Baker has led Oklahoma to the college football playoff for the second time in three years. Oklahoma will open the playoffs against Georgia in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s day.
Baker Mayfield has completed 71 percent of his passes and thrown for 4,340 yards 41 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. He averaged 11.8 yards per attempt which will mean he will shatter the FBS record he set last year. Mayfield and the Sooners have posted the highest offensive efficiency rating since ESPN started tracking the metric in 2005.
When Mayfield career started at Oklahoma and he took over as the starting Oklahoma quarterback in 2015 the Sooners have led the FBS in points per game, offensive touchdowns, yards per game and yards per play the last three seasons.
Baker Mayfield became the 10th player in FBS history to throw for 14,000 yards in a career. However he is the first to rush for 1,000 yards. He moved in front of Sam Bradford for the FBS record for career passing efficiency. So he became only the fifth player and joined Herschel Walker as the second player in 68 years to finish in the top four of the Heisman voting three times. SMU’s Doak Walker, Army’s Glen Davis and Army’s Doc Blanchard were the only Heisman winners to transfer to one FBS program to another. Blanchard played at North Carolina before transferring to the Army.
Baker Mayfield gave Oklahoma it’s sixth Heisman trophy winner which puts them in a tie with USC for the third most all time not including Reggie Bush’s vacated 2005 Heisman. Heisman winners Billy Vessels, Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Jason White, and Bradford. Oklahoma will soon build a statue of Mayfield to put in it’s own Heisman park which sits to the east of Oklahoma’s Memorial Stadium.
“It’s been a dream come true to play at OU” Mayfield said “Although I grew up in Austin, Texas I was always Sooner born and Sooner bred. And you know, they say, ‘When I die, I’ll be Sooner dead,’ and I truly mean that. It has been a dream for me and a honor to represent my school.”
So when he won the starting job as a true freshman walk on at Texas Tech Mayfield bolted to Oklahoma. Although when he showed up in Norman, Oklahoma in 2014 without invite from coach Bob Stoops there was much less promise of a scholarship. Baker was a Oklahoma Sooner fan when he was a kid living in Austin, Texas he wanted to see if he could make it to his dream school.
However he started his first season as an ineligible transfer. Mayfield ended up beating out Trevor Knight the next season for the starting quarterback job. Mayfield took Oklahoma to the college football playoff in 2015 posting a 34-5 career record with the Sooners.
“There’s a lot of people who put effort into this” Bob Stoops welcomed a kid with open arms that was chubby and unathletic into the program. Mayfield said. “I wouldn’t say that many would do that but thank you” Baker Mayfield Heisman season didn’t come without bumps in the road and controversy he mostly created that he had to overcome.
February 25th, Mayfield was arrested in Arkansas for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and resisting. A month had passed and the police released a dash cam video of Mayfield trying to run away from the scene before law enforcement tackled him into a wall. Mayfield signed a plea deal that dropped the resisting arrest charge. When Oklahoma first spring practice began Mayfield spoke to the media for a half hour noting that he had made a mistake and had let people down.
One of the biggest wins of his career a 31-16 victory over Ohio State Mayfield planted a Oklahoma flag at midfield of Ohio State stadium. A couple days later her apologized saying he “didn’t mean for it to be disrespectful.”
Although the controversy was far from over he grabbe his crotch and started cursing Kansas fans on the sideline on November, 18th he later then apologized. Oklahoma Sooners coach Lincoln Riley suspended Baker Mayfield from starting his last career home game and temporarily ripped him of his captain status. Mayfield sat out for the first series and then threw 3 touchdown passes in their victory against West Virgina. So the next week Mayfield threw another 4 touchdown passes giving them the victory over TCU in the Big 12 championship game punching Oklahoma’s ticket to the college football playoff and clinched the Heisman for Mayfield.
Mayfield said Saturday night that Riley’s hiring in June “changed my life” “Coach Riley you have been a great mentor to me, “Mayfield said we’ve been through a lot together so I appreciate you.”
