Guard Richie Incognito says Thursday Night Football is “Bull—.”
One Bills player is extremely discontent with the fact that he had to play on Thursday night. The Bills lost to the Jets last night 34-21. The Bills had only 63 rushing yards, their fewest since Week 4 in 2015. It sounds like this player is making a large excuse on his terrible game play. Guard Richie Incognito whined about having to play on four days’ rest.
“They suck,” Incognito said of Thursday games. “They throw a wrench in our schedule. It’s absolutely ridiculous that we have to do this. As physical as this game is, as much work and preparation that goes into this, to force us to play games on four-day weeks, it’s completely unfair and bulls—. The league makes money off it, and that’s all they care about anyway.”
Now, I’m not going to say he’s wrong about the NFL wanting to make money off it, which they do because they are still a business. Thursday Night Football has recently had lower and lower ratings from years past. Whether that’s due to the National Anthem dispute or the lack of quality in the games, fans are still tuning in. The Oakland Raiders-Kansas City Chiefs TNF game on October 19th did 14.38 million viewers. The 2017 World Series between the Dodgers and Astros pulled in 15 and 15.7 million viewers per game. Therefore, people are still watching regardless.
Now as stated previously, Incognito had a terrible game last night which he blamed on poor rest and preparation time. The Bills offensive line gave up seven sacks, the most by Buffalo since week 2 of 2015. So, it seems as though Incognito may be reaching for something to put the blame of a bad performance on. Other Bills players didn’t reiterate what Incognito had said.
“I’m not gonna complain about it,” center Eric Wood stated. “Everybody’s got to do it. I thought we were prepared. When the lights came on, we just didn’t make enough plays.”
Coach Sean McDermott added: “[The Jets] were challenged with the same short week as us and had the same amount of time to prepare, so give them credit.”
There are 14 games this season on Thursday night. This is a recently expanded number as well from former years. Richie Incognito is playing on a three-year $15.75 million contract. Play on four days rest like the rest of your team and quiet down. You don’t get paid to make excuses. You get paid to block for the players behind you. When you don’t, learn from it and move on.
