The Buffalo Sabres have locked up the face of their franchise, signing Jack Eichel to an eight-year, $80M contract extension. Eichel’s deal will begin at the start of next season, as he still needs to play out the final year of his entry-level contract this season.
Drafted 2nd overall behind Connor McDavid in 2015, Jack Eichel recorded 57 points (24 goals, 33 assists) in 61 games last season with the Sabres. According to many NHL experts, it is only a matter of time before Eichel becomes one of the league’s marquee attractions.
From an entire team perspective, there is certainly a lot to like about the Buffalo Sabres this season. There are still concerns regarding defense and penalty-killing, however, Jack Eichel, Kyle Okposo, Evander Kane, Ryan O’Reilly, and Sam Reinhart make up a very talented group of forwards. Robin Lehner is also coming off a solid season in net, and Buffalo was the NHL’s best team on the power play last season.
The city of Buffalo has been without playoff hockey since 2010-11, but if they fill out the rest of their roster correctly, the presence of Jack Eichel over the next eight years ensures that the Sabres have a chance.
This is great news for the Buffalo Sabres and their fans!
