For a second Adrian Peterson’s comment makes me think back to the off season when it was first announced that he had signed with the Saints. My first thought was why? The Saints didn’t need him, they have Mark Ingram as their feature back. I was willing to give it a chance. A lot of teams make a two Running Back system work in the game these days. How bad could it possibly go?
Fast forward to week 1 for the Saints. In a 29-19 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Peterson ran the ball six times for 18 yards. The Saints run game seemed to be non-existent in that game overall. Both Peterson and Ingram couldn’t move the rock on the ground.
Peterson was visibly upset with Sean Payton for not using him in game more. Nine snaps for a player who many consider one of the top running backs of all time is not a big number. Payton heard him complaining and even turned around annoyed.
This week the Saints will move forward to face a New England Patriots team that let up 185 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 42-27 week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. With how bad that defense looked, don’t be surprised if Sean Payton tries to use this game to ignite Peterson and Ingram.
If this continues, you can expect Peterson to be on his way out of New Orleans sooner rather than later. Trade rumors have already linked him and Arizona after the season ending injury to star RB David Johnson.
