We all saw it last night, that puzzled look on Eli Manning’s face as the New York Giants lost their week 1 game against the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Heading into last nights game the G-Men were the favorites to win NFC East but after an abysmal performance we were all left with uncertainty. As much as it hurts me to write this article, being a Giants fan myself, all I gathered from last nights game is that we desperately need a healthy OBJ. Newly acquired receiver Brandon Marshall was a ghost, only making 1 catch on 4 targets for 10 yards. Sophomore receiver Sterling Shepard led the way with 7 receptions on 8 targets for 44 yards.

Coming into the season we knew what our biggest weakness was, the obvious lack of a offensive line. Ereck Flowers is looking more and more like a bust as Eli Manning was sacked 3 times. The O-line just couldn’t protect their leader, it seemed like every time he dropped back Cowboy defenders were there to pressure Eli. The ground game was terrible, as the 2nd year running back Paul Perkins couldn’t find room to run at all tallying 16 yards on 7 rush attempts. Some questionable play calling on offense made us miss our guy Tom Coughlin on the sidelines, as Ben McAdoo struggled to find answers. All of this leads us to the magic question, can the New York Giants succeed without their star Beckham Jr?

On a positive note, the one thing that caught my eye was the match-up between star Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant and the top gun of the Giants defense, corner back Janoris “Jackrabbit” Jenkins. Dez Bryant was held to only 2 catches as the two physical players went at it every snap. Jenkins is a great competitor, winning a championship in high school and another in college under the 2008 Urban Meyers Gators before being kicked off the team for possession of marijuana, he later transferred to the University of North Alabama before being drafted in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft by the Rams. Jenkins, Landon Collins, DRC and Eli Apple need to step up to become the keys to the defense as they should be. Eli Apple got burnt by Williams every play it seemed like.
Beckham Jr. should return next week, and we hope the G Men can bounce back from a terrible performance. The O Line will be a problem until we make a change there, Adam Bisnowaty looked good in the pre season and training camps. Maybe in time the coaches will give up on Flowers like I have. With the receiving core that they have should open up for big plays down field if (A very big if) Eli Manning has the time in the pocket to throw to their talented receiving core. The Giants head into week 2 with plenty of time to practice and recoup as the Detroit Lions head into New York to face the Giants for their home opener on Monday Night Football.
